New build home in conservation area - Glasgow West End

Located in the heart of the Glasgow West Conservation Area, the site lies adjacent to an existing Victorian villa. With a steeply sloping, south facing site and views across the city, the location presents a unique opportunity to create an extraordinary contemporary house in an established historic setting.

The duo-pitched form of the house has been conceptually pulled apart to allow light deep into the stairwell and down to the bedrooms on the lower ground floor. The two wings are expressed in different materials – sandstone and timber cladding, with zinc cladding and glass utilised in the central ‘void’ space.

The two storey, south side of the building opens out to embrace the private garden and views to the rear with large areas of glazing in contrast to the single storey to the north with punched windows. This also allows us to minimise the impact on the Conservation Area. The design of the windows is part of an environmental strategy to maximise the south facing glazing as well as a conscious effort to differentiate the experience of the various rooms and spaces within.

Internally the accommodation is spread over two floors with en-suite bedrooms and a family bathroom on the lower ground level and living, dining and kitchen spaces on the ground, entrance level. To reflect the complexities and varying needs of contemporary family life, a variety of open plan spaces and private rooms is offered.

Completed Summer 2023.
